Than Luu, M.D.
Dr. Luu believes that the role of a family physician is to provide a medical home for his patients. A medical home should provide more than just an office where patients can obtain treatment for their illness. To provide a true medical home for a patient is to understand how the disease affects the patient and how the patients affects the disease.
For example, treating a patient with diabetes is more complex than controlling blood sugar and its complications. The first step in controlling a patient's blood sugar is to understand the patient's diet. Diet is more than just what kind of food one consumes. Diet s influenced by culture, economics and availability of food products.
A patient's socioeconomic status dictates what they can afford to eat and what is available in their area. This is one of the main role of a family physician to understand not only the disease process but the psychosocial process that affects the patients
This type of approach gives the physician a multi-faceted angle in helping the patient with their disease. It gives the patient a sense that their doctor is not only treating the disease but a true understanding of the disease process.
The practice of medicine in our current environment is very different from yester-year. Our technology, economics and legal system have changed much of the way physician practice medicine. However, the basic principle of medicine have not changed and that is understanding the patient in a complete sense is still the cornerstone of medicine. Dr. Luu feels that being a family physician gives him a unique opportunity that no other field offers and that is to understand the whole process that affects the patient.
