Finding relief for a deviated septum has been a long and exhausting journey
for Maria Dibs. “I fell and fractured my nose as a young girl, which
led to pain and discomfort, in addition to years of compromised breathing
through my nose,” she told us. With a deviated septum, the thin
tissue separating the two nostrils is not positioned optimally, often
due to injury. This creates congestion of the nasal passages. “Unfortunately,
my previous physicians considered the problem more cosmetic than medical,”
said Maria, “and none of them addressed my concerns.” Enter
Timothy Ortlip, MD, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Washington Hospital
and Washington Township Medical Foundation. In a recent procedure at the
Washington Outpatient Surgery Center, Dr. Ortlip re-aligned the nasal
bones created by the fracture, grafted cartilage from the tip of Maria’s
nose to smooth and support the bridge, and restructured her septum to
clear the airway. How does Maria feel today? “It’s the most
refreshing feeling to get a full breath of air through my nose,”
said Maria, who is soon off to graduate school on her way to becoming
a pediatric speech-language pathologist. “I am so thankful to have
found such an expert surgeon and team,” she added, “and I'm
thrilled to be breathing normally again and free from discomfort.”
“Dr Van Tassel is the best! This doctor knows what he is talking
about – he not one of those doctors that play a guessing game with
you… And he does look at the chart to know your name. I have recommend
him to my family and friends and every one has thanked me and say that
he is a excellent doctor… You go Dr. Van Tassel, you’re taking
over the Tri-city area ! You’re worth your weight in gold!”
“This guy is great. I had been having an issue for a few years with
my throat and after going through quite a few different medications over
the years that did nothing, I finally went and saw him. Within a few minutes
he gave me an accurate diagnosis and suggested the right medication for
me. That was a few months ago and now I feel like a million bucks. A really
nice guy and a great staff on top of that. Couldn’t ask for anything

“Dr. Van Tassel is AWESOME!! He performed my tonsillectomy. No complications
and recovery wasn’t anything he didn’t warn me about. He’s
really funny and laid-back too. If doctors make you nervous, Dr. Van Tassel
will probably change your mind.”
— Claudine V.
“Dr. Van Tassel was awesome. My husband had a large salivary stone
and Dr. V.T. removed it surgically. Dr. Van Tassel is professional, easygoing,
and funny. I was very impressed with his medical knowledge and his credentials.
He took my husband’s case and he got surgery within 1 week. I was
extremely impressed. I would recommend this ENT highly if you have any

“I went to Dr. Van Tassel when I had severe vertigo. I was completely
immobile by the condition and freaked out! Dr. Van Tassel performed the
“Epley” maneuver and I felt better immediately — it
was really magical! I was not completely “cured” but the relief
was instant. The hospital had suggested taking various meds to drain my
sinuses and Dr. Van Tassel was confident it had nothing to do with my
sinuses. He took me off all meds and I got back to myself in a couple
of days. He was confident in his analysis, funny and empathetic —
all things I needed at that time. If I get this condition again, I am
heading back to visit him!”— Zika S.
“I have been seeing Dr. Van Tassel for at least three years now maybe
four. I had an old-school ENT Doctor and all he believed in doing for
my sinus problem is flushing them out — with a needle, mind you.
I went to Dr. Van Tassel, he scoped me (which the other doctor could not
do) and said my sinuses were just fine: allergies were a main cause. Gave
several samples of allergies sprays and we found one that worked.
The second time I was concerned I might have throat or esophageal cancer
he came in the room, said “let’s take a look” and the
scope was a breeze and he said it was GERD. No one ever diagnosed me with
that. Started me on a great new med called Dexillant and I have not had
in issue since.
Look, if you want the best ENT doctor with a very kick-back attitude that
does not scare the heck out of you, Dr. Van Tassel is number one. We are
very lucky to have him here in the bay area. His credentials speak for
themselves. And yes you may have to wait but it will be very well worth
it. Dr Van Tassel, you’re the best. And thank you so much for the
great care you have given me.”

“Dr Van Tassel is great! I just had sinus surgery 2 Weeks ago and
I’m feeling much better already! I cannot Understand ANY negative
opinions on this wonderful Doctor! He gives it to you straight up, has
a great personality and is a professional doctor 10000000000000000000%
If you are lucky to get him, you better grab him.”— Tom C.
“Last year I found out I had a parotid gland tumor. I was seeing
an ENT in Castro Valley. We had made all the arrangements for surgery
and believe me I was scared. It was to be a 5-hour surgery and I would
come home with drain tubes and a big scar from my ear down my neck. Fortunately
I found out this surgeon was not in-network with my insurance. Dr. Van
Tassel was then recommended to me and I asked my Cardiologist his opinion.
I am so glad I did. Dr. Van Tassel performed my surgery and I did not
come home with drain tubes. The scar is undetectable. I found Dr. Van
Tassel to be very intelligent, professional and funny. I would highly
recommend him and I will never go to anyone else. His office staff are
“Thank you Dr. VT for helping my husband. We appreciate all of your
help and care. I would further like to thank you for your after-hours
help when the pharmacy fell through with his prescription.”
“I’ve seen Dr. Van Tassel for two issues and both times he
has been absolutely wonderful! On the first occasion I saw him for dizziness.
My general doctor had diagnosed benign positional vertigo but just gave
me some anti-nausea meds and some exercises to do. I saw Dr. Van Tassel
who agreed with the diagnosis but he was able to do a simple maneuver
in the office (moving my head into certain positions) which immediately
relieved my symptoms. Hooray!
On the second occasion I developed Bell’s Palsy which is a horrible
sudden and hopefully temporary paralysis on one side of your face. The
ENT in my medical group plan made the whole experience worse by telling
me I had the worst case possible and that there was nothing to do but
wait and see what would happen. I decided to see Dr. Van Tassel based
on my prior experience. What a difference in bedside manner! Dr. Van Tassel
calmed me down and told me I certainly did not have the worst case and
that he anticipated a recovery. However he also took the time to call
a specialist in facial nerve damage to ascertain whether a particular
diagnostic test would be helpful in my case. He also checked in with me
several times over the 5 weeks I was recovering to see how I was doing.
I highly recommend Dr. Van Tassel if you need an ENT. He is caring, never
makes you feel as though he is rushing through the appointment, and obviously
has great skill. I will definitely see him again.”

“Dr. Van Tassel is a truly great doctor and I feel like great doctors
are few and far between these days. I had sinus surgery with him a year
ago and felt so much better with minimal discomfort after the surgery.
I feel very comfortable going to him because he treats you as a friend
and somehow manages to remember details about your life despite tons and
tons of patients. I value his professional opinion and believe that he
is above the rest in his field. I have also had a very good experience
with all of the staff since I have been coming. Thank you, Dr. Van Tassel
and staff!”— Michelle D.
“Can I say I sleep like a champ now! My hubby says he has to check
to see if I’m even breathing at night when I’m asleep because
I don’t snore or breathe heavy! Although tonsillectomy, glossectomy
& turbinate reduction is a relatively painful procedure, the care
& results were fabulous! I like laid-back doctors, it makes me feel
more comfortable & although he is a kick-back doc, he’s one
of the best, he knows what he’s doing, truly one of the best!”— Raternator R.
