Colon Prep Instructions
How to Get Ready for Your Colonoscopy
Your doctor will instruct you to follow a colon prep regime before your
colonoscopy. This prep is a liquid that causes bowel-clearing diarrhea.
Your doctor will most likely instruct you to stick to a clear liquid diet
for at least 24 hours prior to your procedure, and to avoid food and drink
completely in the two hours leading up to your appointment.
Colon prep is typically an unpleasant experience. Ask your doctor about
the options available to you. You can read about different colon flush
options and ask your doctor if you have any preferences. The more informed
you are, the better an experience you will have.
Why Does My Colon Need to Be Clear?
In order for your colonoscopy to be successful, your bowel needs to be
completely empty. This allows your doctor at Washington Township Medical
Foundation to see your colon clearly in order to check for:
- Tumors
- Inflammation
- Ulcers
- Colon polyps
These exams are often ordered in response to gastrointestinal symptoms.
Your doctor should give you the instructions at least two weeks prior
to the procedure so that you can properly prepare. If you do not follow
these instructions and are not properly ready for the procedure, the test
may need to be repeated.
