Michael Goldin, M.D.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine
Dr. Goldin is a fellowship-trained physiatrist who specializes in the diagnosis
and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in variety of patients. He
believes that the key to the successful evaluation and management of every
patient is to perform a thorough history and physical examination. After
reviewing his findings and treatment options, he and his patients make
a mutual decision on how to proceed. Treatment typically includes the
correction of biomechanical deficits through detailed and focused physical
therapy, possible short courses of pain medications, and various types
of injection procedures. He performs traditional injections that historically
have involved steroids to help with inflammation, and also has an interest
in more novel growth factor injections that use the body’s own growth
factors to help heal various injuries. In addition, Dr. Goldin is trained
in electrodiagnostics and musculoskeletal ultrasound. He can use these
when appropriate in order to make a diagnosis and determine appropriate
treatment.
Dr. Goldin earned his medical degree at Virginia Commonwealth University
in Richmond, Virginia and went on to do his internship at Tucson Hospital
Medical Education Program in Arizona. During his physiatry residency at
Stanford, he found that his main interests were in understanding functional
anatomy and applying this knowledge to help all patients maximize their
function. During his senior year, he ran a free musculoskeletal clinic
for the uninsured patients in the area. Here he was able to teach junior
residents and medical students and to treat a population that required
this kind of care. Dr. Goldin’s residency honors include the top
score on the annual self-assessment exam during his third year and the
top score on the electrodiagnostics examination in his final year. His
article, “Tendinopathy: A Review of the Pathophysiology and Evidence
for Treatment”, is about the treatment of a variety of tendon problems,
and it appeared in The Physician and Sports Medicine in September, 2013.
Dr. Goldin has played several sports throughout his life, including tennis,
soccer, basketball, skiing, and boxing, to name a few. When not at work,
he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
