Jeffrey E. Thomas, M.D.,
Cerebrovascular & Neurointerventional Surgeon
Dr. Jeffrey E. Thomas specializes in neurovascular (blood vessel) disease
involving both the brain and spinal cord, as well as performing spinal
and general neurosurgery – such as hydrocephalus and benign tumors
of the skull base. His expertise also extends to interventional neuroradiology,
also known as endovascular neurosurgery (surgery performed from within
the blood vessels). His medical practice is unique in its integration
of microsurgery and this catheter-based brain surgery, which is performed
through a tiny incision in the leg, without opening the skull.
The capability to treat such disorders by both open and neurointerventional
methods provides a singular advantage in making complex treatment decisions
for these lesions. Dr. Thomas also performs microsurgery of the spine
for more common disorders associated with neck and back pain, like disk
and nerve compression.
Dr. Thomas earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees at Columbia
University in New York, and completed his internship and neurosurgical
residency training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and the University
of Southern California, respectively. He completed his fellowship in Interventional
Neuroradiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia,
and his research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Center of Massachusetts
General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Dr. Thomas is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the largest organization
of surgical specialists in the world, and an elected Fellow of the New
York Academy of Medicine. Following his university-based academic career,
he entered into private practice in 2003, affiliated with California Pacific
Medical Center in San Francisco. He remains academically active as the
Neurosurgical Director of the Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive
Stroke Care Center, and Medical Director of Interventional Neuroradiology
at CPMC. His hospital affiliations in San Francisco include CPMC and St
