AIDS/HIV

What Is HIV / AIDS?

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can cause AIDS, a condition that inhibits your body’s natural ability to fight infections. Once HIV is in a person’s body, it tends to affect the immune system in a series of stages. Many people with HIV seem very healthy and normal. There are often no symptoms of HIV, which is why it is so important to get tested regularly. It is not uncommon for a person with HIV to go years without showing any symptoms. However, a blood test can reveal the truth between six weeks and six months after exposure.

AIDS can take up to a decade to develop after the HIV virus infects a person. There is no cure available for HIV but there are therapies and treatments that can help with symptom management. It is extremely important to receive treatment for HIV. A person with HIV who does not receive treatment will eventually die from the virus. In most cases, HIV is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. Learn more when you speak with your internist at Washington Township Medical Foundation in Fremont.
