Neck Pain

Spinal Recovery at Washington Township Memorial Foundation

Whether it lasts for a few days or several months, neck pain is not easy to live with. Several factors could be responsible for your condition, and most likely you are doing whatever you can to avoid the pain wherever possible. As neck pain can make it difficult to drive, work, and exercise, it is recommended you see a doctor about the condition to recover as fast as possible, but it most cases it will go away on its own. If your condition was caused by an accident, however, you should see a doctor immediately as the injury could be serious.

Neck pain may require immediate treatment if it is accompanied by:

  • Pain, tingling, or numbness in the arms or legs
  • Fever
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Difficulty maintaining balance
  • Severe headaches

Managing Neck Pain

Your neck pain may go away on its own with time, but there are several things you can do to expedite the process:

  • Get plenty of rest and start sleeping with a special cervical pillow
  • Regularly apply a cold or warm compress
  • Take aspirin or other over the counter pain medications
  • Consider buying an ergonomic chair or mattress
  • Work with a physical therapist on easy exercises to strengthen the neck

If your neck pain lasts longer than a month, it is time to consult with a medical professional.
