Types of Diabetes

There are several different types of diabetes, including:

  • Type I diabetes / Juvenile diabetes – Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type I diabetes, is a chronic disorder in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin, or only produces a very small amount. It is typically diagnosed in children and adolescents.
  • Type II diabetes – Type II diabetes describes a problem with the way your body processes glucose, or blood sugar. Type II diabetes used to be called adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes. A chronic condition, patients with Type II diabetes can manage symptoms and achieve quality of life with medication, insulin therapy, and lifestyle changes.
  • Gestational diabetes – Gestational diabetes is a condition that affects pregnant women. During pregnancy, the woman’s placenta produces hormones that can lead to blood sugar buildup. In some cases, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to manage this increased blood sugar. There are no symptoms of gestational diabetes, but your doctor should administer a blood sugar test during your pregnancy to screen for this possibility. Treatments include blood sugar monitoring, physical activity, and a healthy diet. You may need to use medications, and the baby will need to be carefully monitored.
