Imaging Studies

Diagnostic Imaging at Washington Township Medical Foundation

Imaging studies in the practice of physiatry may be used for a range of reasons and in diagnosing / assessing a number of injuries and conditions. Since a physiatrist is ultimately a medical doctor who focuses on physical medicine and rehabilitation, imaging studies such as those listed below can help a physiatrist in diagnosing and assessing an injury to the musculoskeletal system, which includes the ligaments, tendons, nerves, joints, bones, and muscles.

Some types of imaging studies utilized by our Fremont physiatry team at Washington Township Medical Foundation include the following:

  • Computerized tomography (CT or CAT) scan – A CT scan uses advanced, specialized X-ray equipment. This type of imaging procedure is quick, pain-free, and non-invasive. It provides a doctor with internal cross-sectional images that are highly clear and accurate. Among its many uses, CT scans can be used to diagnose spinal damage / conditions, and injuries to the feet, hands, and other parts of the skeletal system, due to its ability to picture very tiny bones in the body as well as muscle and other tissues.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – MRIs utilize radio waves and powerful magnetic fields to create images of the body. This type of diagnostic imaging scan can be used to diagnose musculoskeletal problems, spinal injuries / conditions, vascular problems, pelvic problems, soft tissue pathologies, and more.
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound – Musculoskeletal ultrasounds utilize sound waves to create images of ligaments, muscles, tendons, and joints. Your physiatrist can use a musculoskeletal ultrasound to diagnose a soft tissue condition such as a sprain, tear, or strain.
